PROJECT OVERVIEW:
BRIEF
Analyze the needs of a specific design opportunity in my community through independent research and studio work. Create a sophisticated design system and a compelling visual story to produce a unique, cohesive solution for the benefit of my community.
APPROACH
I divided the entire process into three parts: research, strategy, and design. Research enabled me to dig deeply into the community and solve the design problem. For strategy, I concentrated on distilling the findings into a design problem. For strategy, I concentrated on distilling the findings into a design objective. This objective allowed me to approach the design phase, when I went through a detailed process of sketching, tweaking.
OUTCOME
From research and ideation, I created No Waste, an app designed for Jersey City, New Jersey. No Waste is a food delivery application that aims to provide users with a variety of takeout food container options. This design approach provides green options for both restaurants and users, brings economic success to the community, and minimizes packaging waste.
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION:
The US uses over 36 billion disposable utensils per year, which could wrap around the world 139 times if laid end to end. The food delivery industry has seen a significant increase in digital orders during the pandemic, with Grubhub reporting a 35% increase in active diners year over year. However, the increased use of takeout and delivery services has led to an increase in food packaging waste, highlighting the urgent need for a solution to reduce this waste in our communities.

No Waste’s logo is inspired by the switch in the iOS system.
A switch is a visual toggle that allows users to choose between two mutually exclusive
states: on and off. It is obvious that when you choose to use No Waste application,
you will have the “No Waste” mode on. This is perfectly in line with our brand’s
goal of providing users with sustainable and environmentally friendly options.

HOW DOES NO WASTE WORKS
No Waste takes on the most responsibilities as the link between restaurants and users, such as collecting used food containers and utensils from lockers, cleaning and sanitizing the used food containers and utensils, and returning the cleaned food containers and utensils to restaurants for reuse.

Options For Different Food Containers
We provide different food container options on
the checkout page to provide our users with greener food delivery options while
still allowing them to enjoy the convenience of food delivery. All of this is
based on making sure that the food's quality is not diminished during delivery
and on a shared commitment by users and restaurants to reduce packaging for
environmental reasons.
FEATURE #2
Rewards Feature
Users' points are displayed on their rewards page whenever
they return a used food container and utensil to a No Waste locker. Users will
receive points for returning their used food containers to the No Waste locker.
This strategy encourages our users to begin with small changes in their
surroundings to preserve the environment, raise environmental consciousness,
and change people's lifestyles. There are various offers to redeem their
points, which they can use on their next order.
FEATURE #3
Return Feature
In addition to being able to easily access a No Waste locker
and return the food containers and utensils, it is also important to have a
feature that allows users to complete the return process as quickly as
possible. Users can easily locate the order in which they want to return the
containers and utensils and select the option to return the container. The users
will then be able to see the location of the locker as well as the locker
number. Simply enter the pin number they received in the control panel or scan QR
code to open the locker and place the container and utensil inside.
Through our app, users can easily complete their returns, from choosing the order in which to return their containers and utensils. The process can be tracked at every stage.
