01 COFFEE AS A SHARED LANGUAGE - Passion Project 2025

The Opportunity

In Brooklyn, where nearly 50% of residents speak a language other than English at home , coffee shops often unintentionally reinforce cultural divides. Complex terminology and exclusive café cultures can feel like barriers for the 200+ language speakers present in the city. My goal was to explore: How might we use design to turn a daily purchase into an act of community building that transcends language?

The Work

I developed a comprehensive service design and visual identity that eliminates barriers at every touchpoint of the "Experience Journey". My approach centered on an intuitive online ordering system where icons and visual cues guide the user through a personalized experience in their preferred language. To ensure inclusivity, I redesigned the packaging and menus to be multilingual and accessible, reducing cognitive load through simplified layouts. Finally, I integrated features that foster a deep sense of belonging, such as surprise seed packets for home gardening and packaging designed to be transformed into shared art.

The Outcome

This project serves as a focused exploration of how design can address social isolation in multicultural urban environments. By rooting the visual system in demographic data and language mapping , I developed a scalable framework for inclusive service design. Although conceptual, the project provides a strategic blueprint for brands looking to prioritize human connection over transactional service, demonstrating my ability to translate complex social insights into a cohesive and actionable brand experience.
